Bedford

A couple of ‘Fluoride facts’ in a letter from Cynthia Bagchi’s letter are worth stressing:

.- The decay rate of 5 year old children in Bedford for 2011/12 showed no increase in comparison to the data produced for earlier years.

– As far as Birmingham is concerned the decay rate of 5-year-old children from disadvantaged families remain the worst in England as per the govt. official report;

Residents petition for removal of fluoride from water in Topsfield

Demeter is part of a growing coalition of people in Massachusetts, and throughout the country, who are questioning the addition of fluoride to public

  • Topsfield resident Jeffy Demeter believes there is a toxin in the water—fluoride.Demeter is part of a growing coalition of people in Massachusetts, and throughout the country, who are questioning the addition of fluoride to public water supplies. Fluoride has been in the Topsfield water supply since 1953, when  Town Meeting voted to add it because of its oral health benefits. Today, the compound is still used topically by dental professionals, but Demeter likens it to a poison when ingested regularly.Demeter decided to petition for a Special Town Meeting to vote on whether to continue fluoridating the town’s water supply. She has collected more than 210 signatures over the course of the past few weeks, but said she has been mostly focused on educating people curious about fluoride. In addition to collecting signatures, Demeter came before the Topsfield Board of Health twice this summer to present her case against water fluoridation. Topsfield Health Agent John Coulon noted that Demeter’s presentations were thoughtful and professional, but that the Board of Health has chosen not to taken any action based on Demeter’s information.”They remain interested in it as a subject,” Coulon said, “but at this time the board has decided to not take action.  The board’s decision, Coulon said, is based on the fact that some of the claims against fluoridation “are documented with no more than anecdotal evidence.”But for Demeter, the evidence is there. “Fluoride is a known toxic chemical, and the FDA classifies it as an unapproved drug,” she said. Fluoridated water has never been approved for safety or effectiveness by the FDA or the EPA, she added. In terms of how much fluoride can do damage, Coulon said there’s no one answer. “It’s going to differ depending on the individual and the level of exposure,” he said. Coulon agreed with Demeter that children, especially infants, would be much more susceptible to harmful effects of fluoride.

Salina, Kan., Next To Consider Water Fluoridation Repeal

Voters in Salina, Kan., will decide this fall whether to end fluoridation of the city’s water supply. That practice could end this November.

Petitions submitted to the Saline County Clerk have been verified as having enough signatures to force the issue to a vote. The question to be decided in the general election is whether the 1968 city ordinance that approved water fluoridation should be rescinded.

Clean Water Sheridan asks City Council to delay fluoridation

SHERIDAN — Following Monday’s City Council meeting, Marty DaBell with Clean Water Sheridan pleaded with the council to enact a moratorium on the addition of fluoride to the city’s water supply until a more informed decision can be made. “There’s been nothing brought to the table on the anti-fluoridation. You haven’t brought that up, and so you’ve only heard one side of the issue,” DaBell said. “What I’m begging for tonight is a moratorium on this issue until we can get the public educated and then bring it back to a ballot and let the people vote on this issue like they did before in 1953,” he continued. “That was the last word from the citizens of Sheridan, Wyoming. We do not want water fluoridation. It was a public vote, and it should be standing today unless there’s another vote and the people vote against it.”. Clean Water Sheridan has hired legal counsel to try to halt the addition of fluoride to the water, which is tentatively scheduled for mid- to late August. –

Fluoride vote signatures validated

BOYNE CITY — Boyne City City Clerk Cindy Grice on Tuesday confirmed that a group has submitted enough valid signatures on a petition to force a vote on whether fluoride should be added to the city’s water system.

Grice confirmed as accurate information released by the group Citizens United for Dental Health late Tuesday afternoon that a total of 677 signatures were confirmed on the petition, well in excess of the 558 required by provisions in the city charter for a ordinance to be sought through the initiative process.

The petition will now be presented at the city commission’s next regular meeting, set for 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 12.

According to the city charter, the commission has 30 days to chose to either enact the ordinance or put it to a vote of the people. If the commission were to decide to put the matter to a vote at the Aug. 12 meeting, the question could still appear on the November general election ballot.

If enacted, the ordinance would require city officials to resume adding fluoride to the city’s water supply to supplement the naturally occurring fluoride already present in the water.

In May the city commission voted 3-2 to discontinue adding fluoride to the city water supply amid concerns about the long-term health effects of the practice. Those in favor of adding fluoride to the water have pointed to dental health benefits, especially for children.

In the group’s release, one of the organizers of the group who circulated the petition, Carl VanDomelen said, “This is a great day for the citizens of the City of Boyne City. The issue of fluoridation will now be up to the voters, not in the hands of the Commissioners”

VALPARAISO

Aug. 7

Addition of fluoride to Valparaiso water clears hurdle The city should continue to add fluoride to the drinking water, according to Valparaiso City Utilities Fluoride Commission.

On Thursday, the Commission voted 5-2 to recommend that action to the City Utilities Board.

The Commission also voted unanimously that the city should reconsider fluoride at least every five years, and more often if significant research becomes public.

The recommendation and resulting report should appear before the Utility Board on Aug. 26 and then for a vote before the City Council on Sept. 8 if the Utilities Board recommends it.

Fircrest

Fircrest council to vote on water fluoridation issue Tuesday

The Fircrest City Council will make a decision at its regular meeting Tuesday whether to end its 57-year practice of adding fluoride to the city’s drinking water.

The vote comes at the request of a group of people — some who live in the city, others who don’t — who have petitioned the council since May to remove the additive. Group members, led by two local chiropractors, regularly attend council meetings and testify about what they say are dangerous health effects of fluoridated water.

The city delivers water to more than 6,000 customers. Part of the city is serviced by the city of Tacoma’s water division, which also adds fluoride.

For the city to discontinue adding fluoride, the council must approve an ordinance to remove it from the city’s water supply and repeal an existing city ordinance that says the city will add it to the water. The vote will come during the council’s regular meeting, which begins at 7 p.m. at Fircrest City Hall, 115 Ramsdell St.

Dr Stangelove , again…

Cambridge, Masachusetts

Aug 7

A report followed by a long pro-fluoride rant, so bizarre it should remind one of the mentality of some of the fluoride proponents. The on-line article included a clip from  Dr Strangelove – and do note the final sentence.

The City Council last week passed a policy order requesting the City Manager look into the “the risks and benefits of the effects of continuing to fluoridate the city’s water supply.” With that action, Cambridge took a step into the conspiracy theories that have, for more than half a century, lived in the fever swamps of American politics The order was not originally neutral. As submitted by Councilor Nadeem Mazen, the order asked that the City report on the “possible harms” of water fluoridation. Indeed, the summary of the order still reads that way. In a telephone interview, Mazen explained the “hasty drafting” of the order left out the nuances he felt it deserved. His goal, he said, was to start a discussion about the inequities in child dental health care. If fluoride were to be removed from Cambridge’s water, the harms would fall largely on the economically disadvantaged, those who can’t afford a robust program of dental health, he added. Mazen said the he wasn’t against water fluoridation, except in the sense he felt that we should add as few chemicals as few chemicals to natural water as was possible

Hey there, blue staters and donkey humpers! Bet you feel pretty darn good about yourselves, what with yer commitment to peer-reviewed science and yer dismissal of crackpot conspiracy theories! Bet you laugh every time Yr Wonkette talks about people in Arizona and Georgia who are afraid of chemtrails! Well climb on down off that high horse, dipshit, because Cambridge, Massachusetts — a city with two of the finest research institutions on the planet, a city that gave 85.7% of its vote to Barack Obama in 2012 — is now asking its city manager to look into this whole fluoridated water thing to find out what’s REALLY going on.

The City Council last week passed a policy order requesting the City Manager look into the “the risks and benefits of the effects of continuing to fluoridate the city’s water supply.” […] As submitted by Councilor Nadeem Mazen, the order asked that the City report on the “possible harms” of water fluoridation.

Mazen’s original draft order went even further, according to Cambridge City Council watcher Robert Winters. It included this line, which was struck from the order that actually passed.

WHEREAS: Fluoridation is causing millions of children to develop dental fluorosis, a discoloration of the teeth that is caused by excessive fluoride intake

COME ON, Cambridge, you’re better than this. You are better than this, right, Cambridge?

Full disclosure: Yr Wonkette once worked for Cambridge City Councillor Tim Toomey. Did Councillor Toomey, our old boss, vote for this ridiculous, taxpayer-funded look into a roundly discredited conspiracy theory??

Our old boss did not vote to investigate the international Communist conspiracy to sap and impurify all of our precious bodily fluids, because our old boss is cool and not a crazy person. TIM TOOMEY #1!

Queensland chief dentist calls for fluoridation to tackle kids’ tooth decay

  • THE state’s new top dentist has pleaded with all local governments to fluoridise their drinking water for the sake of children’s teeth.

Chief dentist Mark Brown said the Queensland Child Oral Health Survey 2010-12, to be released today, showed tooth decay in children was significantly higher in communities without fluoride. Children living in areas with water fluoridation, such as Townsville, were much less likely to have cavities or decay.

The report is based on dental examinations and parental surveys of more than 5400 children aged 5 to 14 in four areas of the state: Townsville, the rest of the northern region, Brisbane and southeast Queensland.

Townsville was particularly singled out because it has had water fluoridation since 1964

Dr Brown said the report provided overwhelming evidence that water fluoridation resulted in reduced tooth decay, with Townsville children having the lowest prevalence of dental rot among all four regions.

For example, 35 per cent of Townsville 12 to 14 year olds had experienced decay in their permanent teeth, compared with 47 per cent of those living in the remainder of the northern region.

“The benefits of water fluoridation … are clear,” Dr Brown said.

Leading dentist says anti-fluoride beliefs were ludicrous

WACKY conspiracy theories led to the decision to remove fluoride from the Rockhampton region’s water supply, a leading dentist says.

Dr Michael Foley, spokesman for the Australian Dental Association, said there was a perception that fluoride caused cancer and made bones brittle; however what many people did not know was that all water contained some level of fluoride. His comments come after 55% of the more than 300 people who voted in The Morning Bulletin’s online poll called for fluoride to be reintroduced into the region’s water supply.

Dosing of fluoride was removed from Rockhampton and Mt Morgan’s water supply in July last year.

Dr Foley said the anti-fluoride beliefs were ludicrous and insulting to health professionals and scientific

Dr Foley foresees thousands of Rockhampton children receiving fillings and extractions, unlike their counterparts in other areas who have fluoridated water. Dr Foley said the council’s interest should be for its residents but it had been bombarded with anti-fluoride theories and had “run scared”.

“Queensland Health offered to meet with them to discuss the benefits of fluoride in water however they chose not to take up the offer,” he said.

Australia. National Health & Medical Research Council (NHMRC) –

29 July 2014 – Call for evidence on the health effects of water fluoridation. The National Health and Medical Research Council has called for submissions from the Australian public on evidence regarding the health effects of water fluoridation. Water fluoridation is a public health initiative used by governments to help reduce tooth decay. Current NHMRC advice recommends that water be fluoridated at the level of 0.6 to 1.1 mg/L, which balances the benefits of reduced tooth decay with the occurrence of dental mottling (fluorosis)…

Residents all smiles over fluoride decision

FEWER teeth cavities will be the bonus when town water supplies in the Upper Hunter Shire are fluoridated in a few years’ time.

FEWER teeth cavities will be the bonus when town water supplies in the Upper Hunter Shire are fluoridated in a few years’ time.

After two months of consultation, councillors unanimously voted last week to move towards a fluoridation program.

Upper Hunter Shire mayor Michael Johnsen said it was an historic step toward better dental health. The initiative will also mean improved water treatment facilities in parts of the shire.

To encourage fluoridation, the NSW Government provides grants to install fluoridation systems. Planning is underway for improved water treatment for Scone, Aberdeen and Merriwa.

Before the decision, council distributed information about fluoridation, including a mail-out to 6000 households and called for submissions that were considered by the councillors

Region Mayor Margaret Strelow fired back.  “Dr Foley would do well to do a little research and read comments made by councillors themselves before he makes public statements about the reason why councillors – after considering both sides of the argument – voted against fluoride in the water,” Cr Strelow said.

“His ill-informed reactionary comments are an example of the type of behaviour which has contributed to this issue being such an emotive one within the broader community.    “I would have expected better from a man in his position

Taiwan

Aug. 5

A global dental expert yesterday urged the government to allow fluoride to be added to edible salt to reduce tooth decay among Taiwanese children.

Wong Ting Chun (黃殿春), a veteran Hong Kong dentist and the first Asian president of the Federation Dentaire Internationale (FDI) World Dental Association, made the call at a press conference in Taipei on the second day of her four-day visit to Taiwan.

She said the cheapest method of prevention is through fluoridation of water, as it allows all citizens of a country to benefit.

“However, for various reasons, your country has resisted that. I can understand there are sometimes difficulties in putting fluoride or any other particular additives to drinking water, but fluoride remains the most powerful method of reducing dental decay … and cannot be replaced by oral health education” Wong said.

In some countries such as Germany, France, and Belgium, the second choice is to put fluoride in the salt used for cooking or on the table, Wong said.

Chang Yung-min (張雍敏), deputy director of the Ministry of Health and Welfare’s Department of Mental and Oral Health, said the government has yet to list fluoride as a food additive, but several local salt manufacturers have expressed an interest in applying for a permit to produce fluoridated salt.

“Minister [of Health and Welfare] Chiu Wen-ta (邱文達) has instructed us to approve these applications as soon as possible. Such products are expected to be available to consumers next year,” Chang said.
